What Are Camera Sensors?
In a a smartphone Or camera, the image sensor is the device that collects incoming light when the shutter opens and converts that light into an electrical signal. The camera then analyzes that signal and translates the data into colors, that match the real-life image in the smartphone's screen. The Smartphone's image sensor is responsible for determining the overall image quality of your photos, affecting elements like depth of field, dynamic range, resolution, and low-light performance.
How does the sensor work?
The sensor as a device is made up of millions of light-catching cavities known as photosites (referred to as pixels, which can be confusing). When the shutter is activated, these photosites capture light for as long as the sensor remains exposed.
The light photons that are captured by each photosite are interpreted as an electrical signal. The strength of this signal will vary depending on how many photons were captured by the photosite.
In Simple Understanding and Language :
Larger sensors are a driving force behind better low light shots.
Let's talk about HONOR Magic 4 Series / ULTIMATE on Camera Sensor Size and Image Quality
DXOMark who promoted HONOR Magic4 Ultimate to Number 1 Position said :
"The Honor Magic4 Ultimate is the latest flagship device, featuring top-end specs all around, including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 5G chipset. The rear camera features a 1/1.12″ 50MP sensor, one of the largest we have seen on a phone and in the stabilized primary module. The ultra-wide and tele modules both come with a 1/2.0″ 64MP sensor and offer a focal length range from 11mm to 90mm equivalent. The camera also features a flicker detection sensor that is used to guide the exposure system by capturing ambient light and that helps to prevent banding artifacts. A spectrum-enhanced camera (not activated yet with the tested firmware version) captures additional light information from the near-infrared part of the light spectrum which enhances the clarity and dynamic range of images in outdoor conditions."
Key camera specifications:
Primary: 50 MP 1/1.12″ sensor, 1.4μm pixels, 23mm equivalent focal length, f/1.6-aperture lens, OIS, PDAF, Laser-AF
Ultra-wide: 64MP 1/2.0″ sensor, 0.7μm pixels, 11mm equivalent focal length, f/2.2-aperture lens, PDAF
Tele: 64MP 1/2.0″ sensor, 0.7μm pixels, 90mm equivalent focal length, f/3.5-aperture lens, OIS, PDAF
Flicker sensor
Spectrum-enhanced sensor
4K at 30fps, 1080p up to 60fps (tested at 4K/30fps)
Overall , Larger image sensors are an important part of the mobile photography puzzle, but they’re not the only piece. A great quality camera also requires a brilliant lens, a powerful image processing chain, and software that lets you get the most out of the hardware as easily as possible. It’s essential to look at the whole package, not just one part or big numbers on a spec sheet.
That's why sometimes, 50 or 64MP Module are better than 108 or 200MPs camera module and no doubt why HONOR Magic4 Ultimate won the best Camera Smartphone award from DXOMark.
