While we’re still trying to figure out how much Honor will sell their latest big-screen phone, the 8X, we’ve been taking it through the wringer. We’ve already given you our take on the Honor 8X’s gaming capabilities in our gaming review (that’s conveniently linked below) and today we’ll be sharing with you some of the snaps that we took with the phone’s dual cameras in Ko Samui, Thailand.
The Honor 8X comes with a 20-megapixel rear camera with a f/1.8 aperture that’s paired with a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The front camera is a 16-megapixel deal with a f/2.0 aperture lens. It’s important to note that the Honor 8X that we have with us is an engineering unit, and likely will have tweaks in the future when it’s officially launched in the Philippines. With that out of the way, let’s get onto the photos:
Like any phone from Honor, the Honor 8X comes with AI scene detection that bumps up contrast and saturation depending on the scene that you’re shooting. The result is images that are rich and vibrant, though at the risk of having less than ideal dynamic range and skewed exposure on some photos.
The camera also isn’t that great when it comes to low-light shooting, as is shown by our shot of the spirit house below. That particular image was taken near dusk at around 6:00 PM and it shows since there’s a distinct loss of detail and soft focus in the photo as the phone struggles in low light.
You can see how some of the highlights are blown out in this photo as the phone tries hard to expose the scene properly considering the challenging lighting conditions.
When there’s plenty of light, the Honor 8X is capable of taking really great photos. Scene detection really does its job here, making colors pop in the shot.
Again we have to emphasize that our review unit is an engineering sample and not the final retail phone so there will still be changes made to the phone’s software when it comes to taking photos.
