Recently, the latest in-house manufacturer flagship SoC – the HiSilicon Kirin 980 has been announced. How is the performance of Kirin 980 compared with Snapdragon 945, which was released December 2017? Although Kirin 980 won’t be in any retail devices of HONOR until next month at the earliest, we still would like to share with you the initial testing results which were revealed upon the press conference.
To have a better idea of the differences between Kirin 980 and Snapdragon 845, let’s look at the specification details below:

The architecture of the Kirin 980 has eight cores: two are for so-called turbo performance, two are for long-term performance, and the last and smallest four are used to maximize power efficiency when not much is going on.
And the Kirin 980 has many “firsts”, it is the world's first 7nm process mobile phone SoC chipset, the world’s first one built around ARM’s Cortex-A76 CPU and Mali-G76 GPU, the world’s first dual NPU design, and the world’s first chipset to support LTE Cat.21, the first chip to support 2,133MHz LPDDR4X RAM. But how will these affect the smartphone performance? See below the testing results on Kirin 980 and Snapdragon 845:
|Testing Aspects||Kirin 980 vs Snapdragon 845|
|Memory||20% better bandwidth than Snapdragon 845|
|22% lower latency than Snapdragon 845|
|Gaming applications||22% higher frame rates than Snapdragon 845|
|Power consumption||32% lower than Snapdragon 845|
|Photography performance||46% faster at camera processing than Snapdragon 845|
|23% improvement in power efficiency than Snapdragon 845|
|33% improvement in latency than Snapdragon 845|
|Testing Aspects||Kirin 980||Snapdragon 845|
|AI-assisted image recognition||4,500 images per minute||2,371 images per minute|
|Wi-Fi speed||1,732Mbps||866Mbps with a Qualcomm modem
1,083Mbps with a third-party modem
There is no doubt that this is the most intelligent and powerful smartphone chipset on the market, which delivers a substantial improvement in mobile performance compared with competing high-end SoCs.
With all the innovations in Kirin 980, you will be able to use smartphones with this chipset equipped, to capture quality images which preserve important details, record clearer videos with reduced shooting delays, enjoy a longer battery life while still achieve an overall higher performance experience, shoot impressive images whether on dancing to a fast song or quickly running in front of the camera, locate accurately when using map navigation or even in complex terrains and connect to network more stable in congested areas like subways or high-speed rails.
By the end of the year, you would meet the smartphones with this processor equipped on HONOR, with its HONOR Magic2.
