The Kirin 980 is, like all smartphone chips, a system on a chip. This means that it is capable of doing lots of different things at once. Very capable, in fact. The Kirin 980 is so powerful that it can process 4,500 pictures in one minute, or 75 a second. To put it another way, it means that the picture you just took has been processed in just over a hundredth of a second. To us slow humans, that's instantaneous.

The real breakthrough has been the way in which the chip is created. Chips are manufactured by essentially 'drawing' tiny electrical circuits on a small piece of silicon. And they really are tiny. The Kirin 980 uses a ground-breaking seven-nanometre manufacturing process. Now, you may not know exactly how to visualise that, so let's do this quick exercise: grab a ruler and look at a single millimetre. See how small it is? Good, now go ahead and divide that millimetre into roughly 140,000 equal divisions. Exactly. That's how close together the transistors on the new Kirin 980 processor are, and it is why it can handle so much so quickly.

This mind-bogglingly small system has allowed HONOR to squeeze 6.9 billion (yes, billion) transistors onto the Kirin 980, which makes it perfect for the new EMUI 9.0 user interface.
